The Mysteries of Pittsburgh

Based on the novel by Michael Chabon, The Mysteries of Pittsburgh is about the young son of a notorious gangster who spends his last teenage summer roaming around with two friends. The year is 1983, and young Art Bechstein (Jon Foster) is at a crossroads. Completely opposed to his father’s lifestyle, Art plans to become a stockbroker. Visually contrived with painful attempts to create beautiful hip indie cinematography, the whole film feels like the director - whose previous effort Dodgeball was funny if outright commercial - is desperately seeking indie credibility by cobbling together aspects of other indie films but sprinkling it with stars like Mena Suvari, Sienna Miller and Nick Nolte. Like so many of the star-laden premieres at Sundance this year it felt like this was a secrety studio-sponsored vanity project to help the director earn some indie credibility points - it failed in that respect and as a film in its own right.

Fast Food Nation

Richard Linklater has made a niche for himself with a diverse range of highly original, intelligent and interesting films that are largely dialogue driven. Some are idiosyncratic variations of popular genres like Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. Waking Life was cutting edge and in a genre of its own while School of Rock was a mainstream hit in the teenage comedy genre.In a sense, Linklater is like Michael Winterbottom. They have very different styles in video-making, but both tackle vastly different projects from one flick to the next, creating impressive bodies of work. Any Linklater flick is going to be anticipated by fans of his work, and Fast Food Nation does not disappoint.Based on Eric Schlosser’s non-fiction book of the same name, the mpeg is a fictionalisation co-written by Schlosser and Linklater. The structure of the flick is unconventional. It is complex, depicting a number of social, economic and human issues with much compassion. Though the characters’ paths cross (or come close to it) at different stages, the movie is not exactly an ensemble piece. The different stories don’t join up in a contrived manner we often see in this genre. Sections are pieced together with a great line up of actors, such as Patricia Arquette, Bruce Willis, Ethan Hawke and Kris Kristofferson, each of whose characters are interesting enough to carry the mpeg alone.The truth behind the burgers we eat is revealed through Mickey’s Burgers Marketing Manager Don Henderson (Greg Kinnear) as he attempts to discover the source of faecal contamination of the burgers. Amber (Ashley Johnson) is the conscience of the mpeg. As she discovers the ethics in producing the burgers she smilingly dispenses to the public, we share in her transformation.Catalina Sandino Moreno was terrific as the Colombian drug mule in Maria Full of Grace and again shines in this flick as the desperate and indignant Mexican illegal worker. Paul Dano’s role as a Mickey’s worker is small but much more interesting than his performance in the mediocre Little Miss Sunshine. Though the story is American, there’s relevance to Australia with the proliferation of fast food chains, the new IR laws, and cheap imported labour.The flick is largely character-driven but be warned that there are some gruesome scenes towards the end scenes that should and need to be seen. The mpeg is almost a companion piece to Morgan Spurlock’s Super Size Me. Whereas Super Size Me was an entertaining documentary, it wasn’t as hard-hitting as this fictionalised semi-satirical look behind the scenes. Has anyone else noticed that McDonalds is blitzing us with marketing, just as they did in the lead up to Super Size Me? Fast food companies are afraid of this flick, and should be. It is well worth seeing.

Childhood’s End

I caught a screening of this film on the Independent Film Channel three years ago, and recorded it because I had to go to work, so I’ve had ample opportunity to watch this film and analyze it in more than a cursory manner. Quite simply, this is a fantastic, uncompromising film depicting people in unconventional relationships in an extremely fair and honest fashion.Childhood’s End is structured around the development of two relationships. The first one to develop is between Greg, a whiz kid photographer, and a friend of his mother’s, Evelyn, a fortyish, sexually adventurous divorcee. The core of their relationship, which initially appears to be a shallow May-December/Oedipal sexual attraction, develops quickly into a deeper attachment, much to the horror of their family and friends alike. Two of these friends are Rebecca, an anxious teenage loner, and Denise, and outed lesbian. They fall in love, and form a relationship against the background of their troubled family lives. I don’t have a fancy, polished way of explaining why it is that this video is a fantastic one. All I can tell you is that I’ve never seen anything so non-judgemental, or honest in all my life. These characters are not cardboard creations. Greg is an egomaniacal overgrown teenager shagging his mom’s former best friend. This is not done for a laugh, and it isn’t very pleasant to watch up close. Rebecca and Denise are in love, and that’s just the way it is. The scene where the make love for the first time is the most explicit sex scene ever filmed, but somehow it is the furthest thing from pornography that I’ve ever seen, too. This film develops in a very unconventional fashion. I was constantly surprised by the frankness of the dialogue, and the direction that the plot took near the end. I’m not doing justice to all the other characters in the film( such as Chloe the model, who ends up as a Vegas showgirl), but there really are way too many to mention in the detail they would deserve. I look forward to the second film from Jeff Lipsky, whenever it may come.
