Amaryllis (Roselyn Sanchez) lives in Puerto Rico with her parents and has a job delivering pizzas on her scooter. She dreams of being a dancer and is very talented. But, her father, once a great dancer himself, with a New York company, is confined to a wheelchair while her mama drinks too much. Amaryllis’ boyfriend, too, is a jobless “taker”. One day, the young dancer’s father commits suicide and her mother reaches out to her daughter’s boyfriend for comfort. Amaryllis is stunned and flies to New York. But, getting a job in the Big Apple proves difficult and she needs cash fast, although a kindly retired professor offers her a low-rent room in his apartment. Having nowhere to turn, Amaryllis becomes an exotic dancer in a strip club, where she turns heads with her body and costumes as well as her skilled dancing. One regular client in particular, Dr. Christian (D.B. Sweeney) has his eyes on “Yellow”, as Amaryllis is known, as a future companion for himself. But, will Amaryllis totally abandon her dream of becoming a dancer? This movie has one main asset. Sanchez is a most beautiful woman and a terrific dancer. She is truly the reason to watch this flick, as she makes it bearable. Sweeney is less successful, mostly because his role is a stilted, repugnant mess. The other cast members are quite nice, especially the man playing the role of the aging professor. Sanchez looks lovely in her street clothes but her dancing costumes are definitely eyebrow-raising. Then, too, the scenes around Manhattan are nice but the small number of minutes spent in Puerto Rico wonderfully showcase the island’s abundant loveliness . All other production values are adequate but nondescript. However, these items are of little importance as the big problems with the movie are its themes. The world of a professional dancer is undoubtedly a life of cutthroat competition and repetitive rejection. However, this woman’s descent into the dark world of exotic dancing is repulsive. Make that a ditto for the clients who frequent such establishments. Therefore, if you love Sanchez, skip this one and go get The Game Plan instead. Now, there is a lovely movie which highlights her magnetic beauty and talent in a big, big way.

Puffball

Loath it or love it, once you’ve seen Nicolas Roeg’s latest offering - Puffball - you’ll probably never be able to forget it. Roeg has delved into the psyche of the male animal and returned with disturbing images of life, death, religion and sex. Puffball is as haunting and memorable as the best he has done before.Kelly Reilly plays an architect who is refurbishing a derelict house in the wilds. When she arrives with her lover she is watched by an old woman who is possibly a witch and means the visitors no good. This almost familiar opening does not lead down a predictable path Puffball takes myriad twists and turns and surprises and manages to remain original and engrossing. Supported by stunning and atmospheric photography in rural Ireland the plot twists and meanders to an exciting and satisfying conclusions. It is how Roeg waves his spell that is so fascinating and unforgettable. There is little erotic content sex is brutal and cruel and ultimately a woman’s body is the receptacle for hopes and ambitions that surpass the male lust for immediate satisfaction.The cast is excellent. Miranda Richardson is convincing as the woman who aches to give birth, Rita Tushingham is compelling as the sinister old lady who weaves her spells and incantations and the always excellent Donald Sutherland makes a brief but significant appearance.Not a film for screen slouchers, Puffball demands attention and rewards with a haunting tale of rebirth and redemption. The Screenplay is by Dan Weldon adapted from Fay Weldon’s novel. Puffball is disturbing but rewarding. Nic Roeg has given us another great film and for that we should be thankful.

The Girlfriend Experience

Steven Soderbergh took his biggest departure in 2005 when he made Bubble. He filmed it using nonprofessional actors and using real locations to make this small town thriller all the more realistic. Like Robert Bresson before him, he creates a familiar world with normal people thrown into extraordinary situations.His latest work, The Girlfriend Experience, is unlike any other film he has done to date, the closest in comparison being Bubble. This film stars Sasha Grey, a real life famous babe who plays Chelsea, an upscale prostitute trying to find a balance between happiness and a career. Her boyfriend Chris is a fitness trainer and the two seemingly exist knowing very well the extent of each other’s occupation. What any other filmmaker would do is focus on how the man deals with having the woman he loves working as a hooker, like Billy Wilder’s Irma La Douce. What Soderbergh does is look past this and focus on their individual goals and how they can coexist.Most of the movie shows the two characters separate from each other. We are given clues that they are with one another through pictures of the couple and the occasional conversation, but for the most part we watch them separately. They are both trying to earn more money. Times are hard for Chris because of the economy’s decline, but Chelsea will always have work to do. It’s picking the right direction for her career that is the problem.We jump around to different parts of the story and pick up pieces of conversations along the way. Some of them seem to be irrelevant, but in the end it all adds up. It’s wonderfully constructed in an unconventional and nonlinear format.What I loved so much about this film is how I felt like I wasn’t watching a movie but was watching real life people. The conversations were casual and nothing was too over the top, especially considering much of the dialogue comes from clients of Chelsea or in regards to her work. It’s not quite voyeurism but it’s something along those lines.I’ve read some criticism about the performance from Grey and how she comes off flat and doesn’t belong here, but I completely disagree. I don’t think she should be here because she is a pornstar, but because of the way she composes herself. She isn’t flamboyant, over dramatic, or immature, but is sometimes stoic, but more often than not seems to just be herself, which is ironic considering her character has a lot of conversations about not being herself with clients.This film is not for everyone. For those seeking something out of the ordinary should look no further than here. Don’t expect to see a lot of raw fuck. Her role as a prostitute is merely a way to convey the messages about human desires and necessities. A stunning look into a life that is rarely if ever seen.
