Today I went to see “Los Abrazos Rotos”. Two shows. One by one. My friends said me I was crazy. But I didn’t care much about what they said. I knew exactly what I was doing. And surely I don’t regret.Almodvar’s movies just demand it. Each time you see them you discover new levels, meanings, brilliant details and fascinating references. But you don’t get to notice all these as long as you are busy with the plot. And I guess that was the problem with all the unfavorable reviewers here. Pedro never was a director of plots. In any case, not in the first place. He is a great artist and the highest value of his clips is the visual and the emotional, which never failed to be just perfect. And also I must say, even though some would probably find it naive, uncritical, prejudged or whatever else, that when you deal with a work of a master of the highest rank, and for me it is doubtless that Almodvar is just such one, you must wait with your judgments until you sure you didn’t miss something.”Los Abrazos Rotos” is a great film. It is highly complicate and simple at the same time. It is touching, fascinating and meditating. The close-ups and the details are great. Recall the close shot on Penlope Cruz’ red shoes, while she is leaving Ernesto or the voluptuous apples from the gigantic painting in Ernesto’s dining room. The shot when Lena’s tear drops on the tomato she is cutting for gazpacho was just breathtaking, immediately calling into mind the marvelous shot from “Tajones Lejanos”. And of course it is impossible not to notice the splendid interplay with Pedro’s early masterpiece “Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios”. Those who are not familiar with it will certainly miss a lot of fun. To mention just one, Almodvar’s old friend, brilliant Rosi de Palma making the part of Julieta Serrano was simply incredible and absolutely irreplaceable.And talking about acting, what can I say? Penlope Cruz again has proved herself as a great actress, sensitive and powerful, and of course enormously beautiful. I think Almodvar is unsurpassed in his capacity to show her that amazing. Blanca Portillo gave probably her best performance, even comparing to her character in “Volver”. Her Judith Garca (I guess any Pedro’s fan wouldn’t hesitate where the family name comes from) was superb, tragic in her everlasting sense of guilt, and simultaneously incredibly funny in her dealing with highly dramatic issues, and always passionate and calling to empathy. And Llus Homar in the leading role was just amazing, brilliantly exploring the bdsm, the strength, and the ultimate catharsis of his character. I’m sure that now the notorious reproach to Almodvar, that he only knows to direct women, is completely irrelevant and silly (which actually was already clear after “La Ley del Deseo”).The Music in Almodvar’s videos since “La Flor de mi Secreto”, that is since he has found his own Nino Rota, and I refer of course to heavenly Alberto Iglesias, so that music is just beyond any comparison. I think that Almodvar is (and always was) one of the rare directors that understand the great impact of music to movies, and what is even more important he knows to use it in absolutely perfect way. Personally, I am in his huge debt, for introducing me to such legends of Spanish Music as Chavela Vargas.I give “Los Abrazos Rotos” full 10, and I’m sure that after seeing it couple of times more even that highest rate will seem to me just not enough.Mucho gracias Pedro!

Moon is an auspicious debut from Duncan Jones (ne Zowie Bowie), a talented new director who happens to be the son of David Bowie (let me officially be the first person to predict that every review of this mpeg in the mainstream press will have the tagline “SPACE ODDITY!”). Sam Rockwell gives a truly remarkable performance as Sam Bell, a lunar miner who is nearing the end of his 3-year contract at a single-man mining outpost. His only companion is the station computer, Gertie, a straight-up HAL homage that tantalizingly suggests how a culture informed by decades of watching 2001 might choose to design a companion robot.To say too much more about the plot would be to spoil its central conceit, and while I’m sure many reviewers will talk openly about it, I want to preserve the surprise if at all possible at least until the movie gets its theatrical release this coming June.Suffice it to say that Jones admirably mixes together stock genre tropes, paying tribute to a number of classic science fiction features while retaining his own idiosyncratically dark vision. Familiar filmic concepts of the “clean future” and the “dirty future” are mixed together to create a unique atmosphere; the milieu is suitably claustrophobic, the cramped quarters of the mining station serving the clip’s conceptual purposes while masking the shoestring budget. In fact, it may be hard to spare a glance at the meticulously designed collections with your eyes glued to Rockwell for the duration of the picture. His performance is utterly mesmerizing, inhabiting the role so completely that it is impossible to imagine any other actor having the chutzpah to pull it off.Which is not to say that Moon is without its problems; the pacing is hardly consistent and Jones’ reliance on Rockwell tends to undersell his direction. Parts of the clip veer dangerously close to identical thematic elements in Steven Soderbergh’s recent adaptation of Solaris, without being as emotionally potent. But what it lacks in originality is mostly compensated for by the sheer audacity of its central performance and the careful economy of its direction.Moon may be dressed in familiar clothing, but it is a singular experience, a clever, darkly funny and genuinely moving journey into the nature of individuality. Jones is already at work on a second science fiction feature, and it is welcome indeed to see such a promising new talent continue to develop his voice by working in genre flick-making!

After the death of his mother, Paul (Nicky Bell) is looking for some direction in his life and thinks he’s found it with ‘the pack’, a gang of football hooligans in late ’70s Merseyside with a distinctive dress sense and tribal mentality. However, an encounter with former top boy Elvis (Liam Boyle) gives him an alternate view of them and the possibility of moving his life in a more positive direction. Elvis’s dream is to escape to Berlin and lead a more fulfilling life and this is a direction Paul sees…but circumstances beyond his control drag him down with those around him and see his life thrown into chaos.As morally dubious as they are, ‘hooligan’ films certainly have their own cult following in the UK, although this dramatization of a late 70s Merseyside gang has received limited exposure. It’s an admirable piece, without any funding from any of the massive London studios (ah), and it’s not translated particularly badly into a film. But that doesn’t mean it works.The performances from the two lead actors are fine, as well as supporting actors such as man of the moment Stephen Graham in a smaller role, but who manages to have presence even with this. And it’s an engaging piece of human drama, that manages to sweep you along with enough substance and depth to keep you hooked. But it’s all lost on some weird art-house trip with itself, with slow, lingering close up shots of Boyle’s bare chest and symbolism with red paint flowing between fingers representing blood, all done to a haunting Joy Division soundtrack. While it’s stuck in this rut, the story becomes less engaging, the characters lose their depth and the film generally becomes a bit of a mess. Hardly a failure, but still a bit of a shame.
